Leasing a Horse with ATU
If you are interested in Leasing with ATU, please schedule a “New Client Assessment” with us so we can meet you and determine your riding preferences and skill level in order to best match you with a horse. Just indicate during sign-up or during your ride that you are interested in leasing. We will not lease to a person we have never seen ride.
Those interested in leasing are expected to be independent riders who are capable or riding and tacking up independently. Some special arrangements can be made for students who are independent riders but perhaps are unable to fully tack up/down (for example the rider is physically too short/young to get the saddle on the horse). This is taken on a case-by-case basis and may restrict when a rider can come in to ride.
The lease options include a variety of combinations of lessons and rides
Lesson: This is a mandatory weekly lesson to ensure that training is on track and the relationship between horse and rider is still working for both parties. The lessons are 1 hour and included in the lease prices.
Rides: The rider is responsible for tacking up and down, caring for the horse (grooming and cooling off), cleaning used tack, and riding under the arrangments of their training. No high-impact training is allowed outside of lessons (i.e. Jumping, racing, upper-level reining). 1 hour is allotted for your tacking up/ride, however, the rider should allow for an additional 30 minutes to properly cool and care for your horse if needed.
**All Leases include the use of the assigned horse and ATU tack/supplies and are scheduled through our online portal to avoid scheduling conflicts.
** The below rates are the standard pricing for a lease, however, exact rates will be determined based on the training level of the horse and the desired output of the rider (if you are looking for a competition-level horse to compete on, your rates may be higher). Contact us for a specific quote.
Half Lease: $400 per month and includes
— 4 lessons per month (approximately 1 per week)
— 4 lease rides per month(approximately 1 per week)
Standard Full Lease: includes
Option A - $720
— 4 lessons per month (approximately 1 per week)
— 12 lease rides per month (approximately 3 per week)
Option B - $640
— 8 lessons per month (approximately 2 per week)
— 4 lease rides per month (approximately 1 per week)
The above require the rider to obtain a membership to the Tacoma Horseman’s Unit. This is at the rider’s expense and is an annual membership. No lease rides can occur without this membership. If the rider is a minor, then a parent or guardian must be present for the ride and a family membership must be obtained.
Training Lease: $480 per month (great for minors)
—8 lessons per month (2 per week approximately)
**Because no rides are unsupervised, this option does NOT require a membership to the Tacoma Unit.
